Inspire your team, build a core identity and connect with your purpose.
Inspire your team with a team vision statement!
What is your team’s identity? What is your purpose? How can you benefit your customers or the wider public?
Teams with a clear vision statement can build greater alignment, role clarity and purpose. With an authentic vision statement to focus on, team members connect with their own purpose and envision their future career paths.
Specific versus general statements
Does your team need a specific, short-term statement or a long-term vision?
Short-term statements have a specific focus like this:
"We drive customer-focused business decisions through our design practice."
Long-term vision statements will identify your team identity:
"We use data, strategy and creativity to create designs that connect, guide and empower our customers."
How To:
Here’s an example of how the design team of a leading Australian technology enterprise produced their team vision statement.
Step 1: They gathered designers across the organisation for a team vision workshop.
Step 2: The group produced a word cloud based on these headings:
Who is the audience? Who do we do this for?
What is our role in helping them?
Why are we doing it?
What do we do?
Step 3: Each designer produced a statement in isolation based on the answers above.
Step 4: Designers were paired up and asked to share their statements. They produced one statement together.
Step 5: The pair passed their statement to the next pair to review and refine the statement. They did multiple rounds of this.
Step 6: Each pair read out their favourite statements. The group discussed each of these favourite statements and refined it until they found a consensus.
Good Luck ! Rally the team and own it!
